Katy, our Operations Manager, keeps projects on track while boosting our internal operations.

Always one step ahead, she streamlines processes to improve team efficiency and somehow knows the answer to just about everything. Amid the hustle, she’s likely daydreaming about her next pizza or pie.

Being a purpose-driven business and doing our bit for people and the planet has always been a top priority for us – we’re positively fuelled by giving back and making a difference. So, it made sense that our next step was to submit our B Corp application.

What is a B Corp?

A Certified B Corporation (B Corp) is a business that has demonstrated commitment to being socially and environmentally responsible and therefore has been certified by B Lab –  the nonprofit network transforming the global economy to benefit all people, communities, and the planet.

What’s the process?

To become B Corp-certified, you need to complete the B Lab assessment. It’s a lengthy application, consisting of five stakeholder-focused “Impact Areas”:

  • Governance
  • Workers
  • Community
  • Environment
  • Customers

All sections include multiple-choice questions, each with a different score. To be able to submit, you must score at least 80 points in total. It pushes you to review your internal processes to make sure you’re making a positive impact before you can submit.

 What changes did we make?

As we were already part of the Good Employment Charter, regularly donate to various charities, and offer a whole host of benefits for our workers – we were already in a good position when starting our B Corp journey. However, working on the assessment allowed us to identify which areas we could improve on, and so we did!

We now have a long list of social and environmental goals in place for the year which includes:

  • eliminating our plastic waste
  • reducing our carbon footprint
  • using more local suppliers and businesses who share our values
  • increasing volunteering and team building hours
  • offering private health care to all staff

The list goes on! We’re serious about making a difference.

B Corp application sent!

After reviewing our internal processes and making some positive changes, we knew we were ready to submit our application (and what an incredible feeling that was)! There is a hefty wait time for getting accredited, so if it’s something you’re considering – we’d suggest getting started sooner rather than later. It may seem a long and time-consuming process but it’s a massive benefit for not only your business but your workers and the community too.
